Norbert W. Dunkel is Assistant Vice President and Director of Housing and Residence Education. His responsibilities include serving as the chief housing officer and managing a comprehensive campus housing operation including business services, residence life and education, administrative services, custodial, maintenance, personnel and payroll, marketing and public relations, and information technology. He oversees 750 employees working within an auxiliary budget of $40 million annually. Campus housing provides accommodations for over 7,500 undergraduate students in residence halls and 1,800 students and their families in 980 graduate and family housing apartments. Mr. Dunkel additionally coordinates the Division’s sustainability initiatives.
Mr. Dunkel came to the University of Florida in 1988 after holding administrative positions at South Dakota State University and the University of Northern Iowa. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. At the University of Florida, Mr. Dunkel is a member of the Crisis Response Team, University Counseling Resources Network, Emergency Operations Team, Food Service Advisory Council, and Land Use and Facilities Planning Committee.
Mr. Dunkel currently serves as the President of the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I). ACUHO-I represents over 900 institutions in 16 countries. Dunkel co-founded and co-directed the ACUHO-I James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute for 10 years. Dunkel has authored or edited ten books or monographs and over 40 chapters or articles on topics related to campus housing. He recently co-edited and co-authored the book, Campus Crisis Management published by Jossey-Bass. He has served as a consultant at over 20 universities and colleges and has testified before Congressional committees on two occasions. In 2004, he received the ACUHO-I James C. Grimm Leadership and Service Award and the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH) Ken Stoner Award, both national recognitions. In 2005, he received the ACUHO-I Presidential Service Award.
