College admissions offices have widely accepted the role of social media in recruitment and yield strategies. Of the myriad of public social networking tools available, the three big players in college admissions have been Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Pinterest and Google+ have been experimented with, and other platforms like Instagram, Vine and Tumblr have played a strategic role for some.
Until recently, LinkedIn has been utilized at the end of the student lifecycle through alumni, career services, and development offices. This summer, LinkedIn launched University Pages and, earlier this month, opened the platform to high school students. The implications of these new networking opportunities are subtle, yet powerful.
