2017 marked a newsworthy year in college admissions. Popular culture, the political climate, social issues, and technology helped drive a national conversation about the status of college admissions in America; the good, the bad, and the ugly. One thing is for certain, 2017 was a year of big stories and significant changes that will influence the admissions landscape for years to come.
On this episode of Admissions Live, we are joined by Eric Hoover, a senior writer at the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Jon Boeckenstedt, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing at DePaul University and author, to identify and discuss the hottest topics in admissions in 2017 and how they will impact the field in the future.
Adam CastroAdam Castro currently serves as the Vice President of Admissions at Mercy College, a private, multi-campus, comprehensive college in New York. His portfolio includes the areas of college admissions, marketing, branding, and analytics, and the Student Services Support Center. Prior to arriving at Mercy, Adam spent nearly fifteen years at Bloomfield College, the last seven as Vice President for Enrollment Management overseeing admissions, marketing, and financial aid. Adam is an active member of numerous organizations including the National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC), the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), and NAFSA: Association for International Educators. He is also co-host of Admissions Live, a monthly professional development program on the Higher Ed Live network. A New Jersey resident, Adam received his master’s degree in Public Administration from Kean University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Media Studies from the Rutgers University School of Communication and Library Studies.
Eric Hoover, a senior writer at the Chronicle of Higher Education, has been covering admissions and enrollment issues since 2001. He has written extensively about student recruitment, retention, standardized testing, and college access. Eric’s work also has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Washington Monthly, and Nautilus. His journalism has been recognized by the Education Writers Association; most recently, he won a first-place award for beat reporting for his coverage of college admissions. A graduate of the University of Virginia, he is pursuing a Master’s degree in the teaching of writing at the George Mason University.
Jon Boeckenstedt has been with DePaul, the largest private university in the Midwest, since 2002. He is responsible for all processes that recruit, admit, and enroll over 5,000 new undergraduates each year. He also serves as the liaison between DePaul’s Enrollment Management Division and the offices of Information Technology and Legal Affairs.
He is the author of two popular blogs focused on college admissions, financial aid, and higher education data, and recently wrote a chapter on the place of Admissions in the Academy in the book “Contemporary Colleges and Universities: A Reader” edited by Joseph L. DeVitis.
He brings over 30 years of experience in higher education, all spent in admissions and enrollment management. His interests include the intersection of corporate and higher education management issues, as well as institutional strategy; he was among the first in the nation to present on the application of brand to higher education, in 1993.
Jon has worked at Mount Mercy and Grinnell Colleges in Iowa, the University of Dallas in Texas, Communicorp (a marketing consulting firm working with not-for-profits) in Atlanta, and St. Bonaventure University in New York, where he spent seven years as dean and then vice president of Enrollment Management. He earned his bachelor of arts in English Literature from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and his master’s degree in management and marketing from the University of Maryland University College.
